The question “How do you know learning is happening at your school?” initiated a school-wide case study at Kawerau Putauaki School . Tumuaki Rachel Chater and Rumaki Leader Regeena Doyle explain the investigation of the impact of Assessment for Learning (A4L) and SchoolTalk on student agency and ultimately achievement in both Rūmaki and Auraki settings.
Through the collection of student voice, they unravelled students’ perceptions of their learning journey—what they learn, why they learn it, the effectiveness of their learning strategies, and how they know whether they are making progress or not.
It was a stepping stone towards fostering a more engaged, aware, and autonomous learning environment. Through the collection and analysis of data, coupled with reflective feedback from students and teachers, they uncovered actionable insights to clearly answer the question, how do we know learning is happening at our school, ensuring every student’s success is not just monitored, but genuinely supported.
