The revised Years 0-10 English and Mathematics & Statistics New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) means changes to how schools and teachers are expected to report on student progress against the curriculum. There are new Progress Markers that define the level of proficiency expected at each year level, and new Progress Descriptors for teachers to use when reporting to parents and whānau. This marks an important shift for teachers, leaders, and parents. The new reporting approach has been designed to provide parents a clearer picture of their child’s learning and progress, no matter which school they attend.
While many schools already have strong reporting practices, the new expectations offer an opportunity to strengthen and align practices nationally. This workshop, led by Tajinder Kaur and Lauren Burr from the Ministry of Education, will outline what’s changing, what remains the same, the new reporting components, available Ministry support, and how to report effectively for students with diverse learning needs.
Tajinder Kaur has been working in the education sector for over 14 years and has a background in tertiary teaching, education evaluation, quality assurance, and public policy. She joined the Ministry of Education as a Principal Advisor, Assessment in 2023 and has been providing advice on assessment and reporting good practice. She has also led policy work on assessment requirements such as phonics checks and twice-yearly check ins for years 3-8. She is currently the Team Lead Reporting to Parents and Whānau where she provides strategic leadership and delivery oversight of the project.
Lauren Burr, a former Maths and Stats teacher, came to the Ministry in 2018 to work in the Senior Secondary area. She has had several different roles since then and is currently working in the LitNum Programme on some exciting initiatives such as reporting to parents and whānau.
