This workshop, led by Renee Neville and Melisa Chase, presents the Te Manu Ka Rere support initiative, a targeted programme designed to support secondary schools, leaders, and kaiako to strengthen outcomes in the NCEA Literacy and Numeracy Co-requisite assessments.
Participants explore the responsive support model developed through the initiative and examine how it has supported shifts in practice across participating schools. The session shares evidence of progress and improvement, drawing on analysis of Common Assessment Activities (CAA) outcomes alongside insights from participating schools captured through end-of-year feedback.
The workshop highlights key learning from the initiative and demonstrates how targeted, collaborative support can strengthen assessment practice and student success. Participants gain practical strategies and planning approaches to support ongoing improvement, build capability, and sustain progress in their own school contexts.
Renee is an Education Consultant at Evaluation Associates | Te Huinga Kākākura Mātauranga based in Auckland. She is a part of the Niho Taniwha team, has a keen focus of improving teaching and learning for ākonga Māori, and is also part of the Curriculum and Assessment team. Renee is a secondary-trained teacher and led the Te Manu Ka Rere initiative in 2025.
Melisa is an Education Consultant at Evaluation Associates | Te Huinga Kākākura Mātauranga based in Auckland. Melisa supports kura and schools to design approaches that are relational, purposeful, mana-enhancing, and grounded in Te Tiriti o Waitangi. She brings particular expertise in NCEA, standards-based assessment, and standardised assessment, helping leaders and kaiako use a wide range of assessment tools to inform teaching and learning.
