Within a school a multitude of assessments or data points is gathered. How much is too much, what should I gather and how do I know I’m looking for the right thing? What is the purpose, so which is the best assessment?
Vivienne Mallabar, DP of Ormiston Junior College, delves into practices and pedagogies of formative learning and connections to assessment and her own experience with standardised narrative assessment through learning journeys and a graduate profile that is digitised through digital badges. She shares the pitching process to achieve these badges and build students’ self assessment skills. The research is based on her own experience with AfL and data gathered as she completed her masters in student and teacher capability. She touches on the principles, practices and proofs that have informed her teaching and learning and ultimately assessment practices.
Viv is currently a leader of learning at Ormiston Junior College and a foundation leader at the school which opened in 2017. Her interest in assessment has always been in the buliding of capabilty and engagement with the students themselves. Therefore, what we do as teachers is critical in engaging and fostering this. Viv has taught for over 25 years, first in the primary sector and then secondary, and is the current president of the Primary Maths Association and on the Executive of NZAI. She wants to keep her passion alive and her curiosity satisfied!
